[27] Subtropical Chill: Build a Fire

I had a surreal moment this morning. Because of the literal cold front coming through the area, our temps have dropped to near freezing and I caught a scent of wood burning in the air walking to the car, reminiscent of MI fall weather. It also made me wonder if K. was experiencing the same on the west side of the state.
Actually, this spurs an interesting discussion the director of the library I work, the school webmaster and I had yesterday regarding peoples' "expanded sense of geography." It may sound like a weighty topic but the discussion really centered on streets from major cities that people hear about than actually see later on when they actually travel to that city. My director's examples were streets in Hollywood or Park Ave. in NYC. For me, the first one I can remember is Woodward Avenue in Detroit which I had heard so much about in the small town I'm from ~200 miles north of there but never seen before. Then when I went to college at Wayne I lived a block from there (hell, I didn't even know it was M-1 [terminology similar to State Route 1 for those among you, valued readers, who are nonMichiganders]). But then this has happened to me with other routes/cities: Lakeshore Drive in Chicago, U.S. 1 here in Jax, and last year the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets in San Francisco. But I think this sense of geography goes further than streets/towns we haven't been to but ones we have as well: a day ago I saw a truck whose address had the street Palafox on it from Pensacola and it made me think of a lovely, naturally-lit restaurant downtown where good food and company was found.
My writing has forged forward from where it left off before the holidays. I'm hoping to get the current manuscript first draft done before March (a goal). K. told me about a very good story idea she plans to write soon and I am excited about that. I also noticed others among you, dearest readers, who are following their respective muses and I wish you success in the telling of your stories or painting your poetic images.
And now something new I'd like to start doing once a week...
This something new is something I'd like to call Different observations and what it will be is no more than five life observations noticed from this past week--be it people, things, nature, whatever--and recorded here. I'm hoping you all will share with me some of yours as well, my friends.
Speeding down Southside Blvd. behind a racist pick-up truck with a Confederate flag in two places
The way peoples' eyes tear up when overjoyed or angry
Finding a penny lying on the ground and picking it up and putting it in a back pocket (does anyone ever do this anymore?)
Ocean waves creating and maintaining their own energies
Conversational phrases that resonate in the mind like friendly reminders
Movies watched this week
Die Hard 2: Die Harder (Renny Harlin, 1990)
When We Were Kings (Leon Gast, 1996)
Most played tracks (#717)
1. Dare--Gorillaz
2. Move Along; The All-American Rejects
3. Precious--Depeche Mode

~avec plaisir~
