Expounding upon my comment.

Animals are, by and large, helpless; we tie them up, cage them, whatever. They rely on us for food and shelter. Many animals may try to fight back, but are muzzled, or whatever.

Though there are many analogies to these things in relationships, primarily what drives an abused spouse to stay in a broken relationship is fear and certain mental conditions. But they are still *more* capable of leaving than *most* animals are. People who stay in abusive relationships usually, to some degree, "want" that abuse; I feel quite certain that animals don't "want" that abuse to any degree.

This is why people need to be educated on how to avoid and escape abusive relationships as part of the school system, because it is not being taught at home. People have the capacity to leave; they should be given the will to do so.
